Marshmallow Murder Video

I happened to be on YouTube today uploading some videos and I came across this video about some marshmallows unjustly murdered. Ok, I have to admit I thought it was mildly humorous but mostly stupid. Anyway, since it has to do with roasting marshmallows, I figured I would share it. Enjoy.

Rotis-a-Prong Featured on Camping Gear TV

Our friends Ben and Josh at CampingGearTV.com did a great review of our signature product, the Rotis-a-Prong. These dudes are pretty cool and, in my opinion, pretty darn funny to watch. Check them out and make sure you like them on Facebook. You’ll be glad you did!

Chocolate Drizzled Marshmallows: Yum!

Roasting Zebra Marshmallows over the CampfireAwesome New Marshmallow with Chocolate Included!

The wife did it again! She brought home some marshmallows with chocolate already drizzled on top. You know I couldn’t wait to roast those over the campfire.

These are the Campfire Zebras. They’re smaller than normal marshmallows but that just means you can roast more than a few at a time. By themselves, they’re pretty good. The marshmallow tastes, well, like a marshmallow, and the drizzled chocolate on top has a slightly hard texture, like a shell. Pretty much what you would expect from a Hershey bar or similar chocolate.

But the real taste of these bad boys is unleashed when you roast them over the fire. When you get them nice and toasted, the chocolate takes on a rich, dark chocolate flavor. You don’t even need to use a chocolate bar for making s’mores. They add the chocolate all by themselves and they are absolutely delicious!

I don’t think we’ll replace the traditional s’more completely with these since my 5-yr old likes to eat the chocolate and graham crackers by themselves (without marshmallows) but this is definitely something we’ll be doing again!

Pizza Rolls Cooked over the Campfire

Pizza Rolls roasting over campfireWell, my kids did it again. We decided to have a campfire and roast some hot dogs for supper with s’mores for dessert. But the kids weren’t sold on hot dogs and when someone mentioned pizza rolls, they asked if they could roast them over the fire. Being the adventure seeker that I am, I figured it was worth a try!

So we broke out the Rotis-a-Prong campfire roasting forks and put two pizza rolls on the fork to heat up with the campfire. I didn’t defrost them at all – I just stuck the frozen pizza rolls on the end of the fork. It took a little while to heat to the right temperature since they were frozen but with a little patience they came out fine. I was pleasantly surprised by the light smoky flavor added to the normal taste of the pizza rolls. In a way it reminded me of pizza baked in a wood fired oven. Delicious!

The only drawback to cooking your pizza rolls this way is that you can only do a few at a time. It takes a little while to cook enough for you to make a meal out of it. But, if you’re just looking for a nice snack and you enjoy being around the campfire, this might do the trick for you. I’m also thinking about seeing if we can find some larger size pizza rolls to try. All in all, I’d have to give this a thumbs up, and I’m ready to do it again!

Campfire Recipes: Toasting Peeps Over the Campfire

I have no idea where we came up with this idea, but we thought we would give it a shot. We had some Peeps marshmallow treats in the cupboard in early anticipation and we decided to roast them over the fire pit in the backyard to see if this was something we wanted to do the next time we went camping.

Marshmallow Peep Roasting over Fire PitThere’s nothing special about this “recipe.” Nothing fancy in regards to how to do it. Just put the peep on the end of your favorite campfire cooking fork and roast it over the fire like you would a marshmallow. I recommend roasting it as evenly as possible to get a consistent flavor. It’s hard to do that when they’re not shaped symmetrically, but give it a shot. We used our Rotis-a-Prongs as always, but you can use whatever roasting fork you have.

The first thing I noticed was the sugar on the outside of the peeps started kind of melting and turning a different color. Some parts burned slightly and other parts looked just plain weird. But we were willing to get over the look so we could taste the awesomeness of the roasted peep.

But the awesomeness never quite came. The result was… ok at best. We were a little Tasting a Peep at the Campfireunderwhelmed. The melted sugar gave the peeps a unique flavor but I think the overall quality of the marshmallow in the peeps isn’t the same as the regular marshmallows we roast over the fire. So I guess I’m saying we’re not planning to do this again anytime soon but it was still worth doing. Next time you’re bored, I recommend giving it a shot. Just don’t expect the best thing since sliced bread.

New Campfire Recipes Coming!

My wife came home from the grocery store this weekend all excited about a new find. She found a couple different versions of the traditional marshmallow. I won’t go into a lot of detail in this post but one type of marshmallows is a square, stackable version perfect for making s’mores. The other one was regular marshmallows drizzled in chocolate. Really neat ideas.
We’re already watching the forecast to see when we can break out the backyard fire pit and test these new marshmallows for s’mores. You can bet I’ll write some campfire cooking recipes for these new marshmallows and a few other ideas we have. Look for the new posts to come soon. I just hate to offer up suggestions without trying them first and taking pictures so you’ll have to wait until the weather warms up just a tad. I know – the wait is killing me too!

Announcing the Drink and Plate Combo – Genius!

Best Picnic, Tailgating, or Party Plate with built in Drink Holder you’ll ever find!

best picnic plate and drinkwareThis thing is pure genius. Picture this: You’re at a party or gathering where there’s food served on paper or plastic plates. You have a drink in one hand and your food on a flimsy plate in the other hand. Now, with both hands full you’re somehow supposed to figure out how to balance everything and get some of that food into your mouth!

It doesn’t work, does it? If you try to balance the plate on your lap, you’re likely to spill some food because you’re trying to hold the drink at the same time. Or the paper plate is too flimsy. Or the paper plate soaks through and soils your pants. On the flip side (no pun intended) you might try to balance your drink between your legs or set it down somewhere where it will either get knocked over or someone else mistakes it for their own drink.

Now whose idea of fun is that? You can’t enjoy a picnic or party when you’re stressed out by the eating part!

Enter in the Drink ‘n’ Plate. This is the one single solution to all the bad experiences you’ve ever had at a family reunion, graduation party, tailgating party, picnic, camping excursion, or any other event where food is served! The plates are a sturdy, washable plastic with a cup holder built in, and a formed handle that lets you comfortably hold your drink and plate full of food in one hand while freeing up the other hand to eat (or whatever else you want to do with that free hand)!

Plus, the Drink and Plate is customizable with your own images! Now you can pick an image to match the occasion for your Drink and Plate. Having a graduation reception? Print your grad’s photo on the plates for lasting memories. Getting married? Give your guests something they’ll use over and over again. Hosting a company picnic? Give your team members a Drink and Plate with the company logo on it. There are so many ways to create lasting memories with the Drink and Plate!

A word from our President about the Rotis-a-Prong

I wanted to take a moment and share what I love about the Rotis-a-Prong. Quite frankly, I wanted a better video that shows how cool the Rotis-a-Prong is, because the campfire video we have on the home page of the site just doesn’t do the product justice.

Unfortunately, it’s still winter in Wisconsin and I have a lot of snow on the ground so I wasn’t able to film the Rotis-a-Prong in action. So you’ll have to settle for a video of me in my office for now. I promise to get better video out as soon as the snow melts!
